How acceptable is on-road lively sparring?

On my way in to work this morning, a 944 came up behind me and passed me on an otherwise empty road. We both kind of stepped it up and had some fun keeping up with each other until I realized I *may* have been going 70 in a 40 zone. At no time did anything feel out of control, slippery, narrow, obstacle-laden, or anything else. But. It sure seemed really bad when I noticed just how far above the posted limit I had unwittingly gone. Anyone else experience this? How do you balance sporty, spirited fun with avoiding being an asshole or a menace?

"otherwise empty road"

"at no time did anything feel out of control"

Those are your prerequisites.

I'd also add that you should always keep a distance in case the other guy doesn't know what he's doing.

Eh, fine line between that and street racing.

in my book if you know the road, your car and you always feel in control then its ok

40km/h over is an excessive speeding charge and grounds for impound and license suspension here in BC. 30mph over is more than 40km/h over.

You never know who's out for a jog or a bike ride up around the next bend.

I've always taken a very libertarian stance on activities like this. By this, I mean do what you want as long as it does not directly endanger anybody else beyond a reasonable amount.

*Note this means non-residential back-roads.

None. None acceptable.

Lively sparring and public driving should not be mixed. Too many variables to track and monitor. Too many uncontrollables and potential unwilling or unprepared participants.

This is a road in town, or a rural road?

If in town, and other cars or people are around, unacceptable. If out of town, and generally away from other cars and people, much more acceptable.

In any traffic, never.

I know the activities your talking about, I drive an expressway into work every night for 14 years, and I've done it from time to time, I'll admit. But one of the problems is that you never know if the person youy're engaged with is also just "lively sparring", or is actually a butt-hurt dickweed like this douche I encountered recently.

It wasn't even ever about him (silver Pontiac in the first *AND* last frames), asshole just couldn't tolerate a little "ricer fly-by".

I did 90 in a 40 zone yesterday. Should I feel bad? Yes. Do I? No. I was in complete control and was prepared for emergency stops the entire time. A little frisky backroads drive where no children (and very few cars) are around.

I've had one street race in my life. It was my 4Runner vs. my friends F250 IDI. No laws were broken.

You would get Reckless endangerment here in NM. Which has the possible

Incarceration for at least five days but not more than 90

A fine of between $25 and $100

Six points added to the driver's license

Possible suspension of a license for up to 90 days.

Holy shit. That guy could seriously have messed up and got some one injured/killed with that move.

It actually looks closer than it was, and in fact I saw him streaking down the far right lane about 10 seconds before he cut me off.

It would've been easy enough for me to drop a gear and deny him the pass, but here's the thing- if it's that important for you to "show me", I'll let you, every time, because- as you point out- answering stupidity with more stupidity is how tragedies happen. Still, fuck him.

He must have been feeling really insecure about something, and decided to re-establish his dominance. You definitely made the right call. It's situations like that where it is extremely likely for innocent bystanders to get hurt.
